Description of The Botanical Garden Funchal
History of the Botanical Garden Funchal
The Botanical Garden Eng. Ruis Vieira was built on the former grounds of Quinta do Bom Sucesso, which is better known as the Reid’s estate. This famous and rich family inhabited these grounds until 1936. That year they donated it to the government of Madeira to build the botanical garden. Construction began in 1960 and was supervised by the local agricultural engineer Mr. Rui Vieira.
How to get there
There are three ways you can reach the tropical garden of Funchal. Either by car (parking is free), by public transport or by the funicular. If you would like to reach it by funicular, please check our guide “From Monte To The Botanical Garden” on how to get there.
Of course, if you don’t want to start with the funicular, you can also use the public bus to Monte (bus lines 29, 31 and 31a). Follow this link to see the official schedule of all public bus lines on Madeira.
Important to know
The botanical garden is one of the main tourist attractions of Madeira. To avoid the tourist masses, try to get there as early as possible.
The Botanical Garden Madeira Eng. Rui Vieira in Funchal
This wonderful botanical garden is surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of Funchal’s amphitheater. In addition to an extensive garden area, it also contains a museum of natural history, a herbarium and a seed bank with wild flora specimens.
The area covers 50,000 square meters of mountainous terrain and invites its visitors to discover the fascinating world of more than 3,000 plants and trees from all five continents. In the museum you will find fossils, minerals and a large variety of local birds and marine animals.
The herbarium is home to an impressive collection of plants (the majority of which are indigenous species from Madeira, Desertas, Porto Santo and the Selvagens islands). Along with the seed bank it plays an important role in preserving the local plant life of the Madeira islands. Unfortunately both institutions are only accessible for research personnel and not for the public.
