Description of quinta das cruzes

History

The memories this Quinta intersect with the life and history of the city of Funchal. Documented as the last residence of João Gonçalves Zarco, the discoverer of Madeira Island, this Madeiran Quinta represents over 500 years of the history of the island.

The Quinta is located in a privileged area of the city of Funchal, on Calçada do Pico, below the Fortress of São João Baptista (dating from the 17th century), and next to the Santa Clara Convent (dating from the 16th century). As a walled space, in the context of a historic and qualified urban network, it is by definition a Madeiran Quinta, consisting of a house, chapel, pleasure houses and a gardened park. The primitive house was the residence of João Gonçalves Zarco, the 1st donee captain of Funchal. This modest villa was later enlarged by his son, João Gonçalves da Câmara, who made use of the masters who worked on the construction of the church of the Santa Clara Convent, also built under his auspices. The Quinta remained the residence of the Câmara family until the 17th century when it came into the possession of another distinguished Madeiran family – the Lomelino family. The origin of this family goes back to Urbano Lomelino, a merchant of Genoese origin whose presence on the Island dates back to 1476. During the Lomelino family’s stay, the Quinta underwent major alterations, namely with the construction of the archway of the main façade, the building of the Chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Piedade and, subsequently, the predominant body of the main building.

This space remained the residence of the Lomelino family for about two hundred years, until the end of the 19th century. It was during this century that the gardens acquired the aspect that can still be observed today with paved paths and stone fountains, in a Romantic conception of gardened spaces. More recently, in the 20th century, the villa was subjected to various vicissitudes as a result of new functions and forms of occupation and also reflected important economic transformations in island society: it was the headquarters of the Funchal Philharmonic Band (1929-33), a medical practice and embroidery factory (1945-48?), industry related to the Miguéis family, the last owner.

How to get there

Ther easest way to get to the garden is by foot. Just locate the English Church, it is a bit above. You can also take your own car or a cap. It is very close to the famous street “Rua da Carrera”. Just ask around, and you will find it for sure.
